心情好 :D

Had a jolly good lunch. Despite the huge thunderstorm (or maybe becos of it, since I like rain?), had the opportunity to share some very pleasant chatter and laughs with those whom I usually wouldn't. And it's putting a smile on my face today.

It's nice to have a different boss. At this point, altho it may not be an entirely accurate assessment, I think he's good. Think I'm sexist. For some reason, I have a lot more pleasant interactions with men than women. Hmm.

The beautiful sounds of Corrine May,
Little sincere sharings of our lives.
Amidst the thunderstorm,
Lies a quiet beauty...

I hope that's here to stay.

李大傻

2 weeks ago was my week(end) of cultural immersion... with 周杰伦's 不能說的.秘密 and Toy Factory's 李大傻 with my parents. It was really quite enjoyable. It isn't often that I indulge in so much 'chinese-ness' consecutively. The latter made the fact that I cannot speak cantonese so much more apparent. Cos at least 50% of it was in Cantonese.

Ok, a review on 不能說的.秘密 first. 3 things that I really liked about the show:

Content wise...
1) The innocence of young love. U know, when ur young enough to feel v strongly abt someone, yet not old enough to be bogged down by pre conceived notions, worries etc. Life was simple. Just study/be gd at what you're supposed to do. Ok, I suppose u could say it's unrealistic...tt it never happens in real life. But i guess looking at beautiful ideals once in a while is ok. I suppose to me, the dialogue that arose from their 'courting stage' was super cute. Funny cos some of it reflects quite closely the cheeky banter that Shane and I have. Heh.

2) The piano playing. Ok, most of you might not know this, but I play the piano. But, unlike most happening pple who can play, I've been classically trained with lousy creativity. I.e. I cannot improvise. Which is why I can't play pop, which is why I don't like to play now cos I need to read the tao geys. And even then, it takes too much effort just to play it well.

So anyway. I admire pple who play the piano well. Guess I have a soft spot for talented musicians. There's just tons of piano playing scenes in this movie. Feast for my eyes sia. There was a scene where Jay Chou and the girl played a duet... the way it was filmed depicted their immense chemistry and love for music in a really beautiful way. They 'connected' through the song. Also done in a lighthearted and playful way.

Filming techniques/Cinematography etc (I cannot rem the actual defns of these terms btw..but it's one of them la).
3) It's a really beautiful movie in general. All the scenes are all really 美美. The close ups, the angles...all make for beautiful hallmark moment types. Guess this came along with his use of nostalgia. The entire film has tons of nostalgic elements. Which makes it beautiful la I guess. Yeah.

So I guess in general, the storyline is also interesting. Altho after the 2nd time I watched, I discovered a huge loophole in the twist =_= So sad. But, to borrow Wayne's words... the build up to it was good. :D So yeah. If u haven't watched it, u shld. Esp if u like music..more specifically piano playing.

Okay. So now about 李大傻

Twas an extremely moving play. In summary, it was abt "the life story of legendary radio broadcaster, Mr Lei Dai Soh. He was a well-loved Cantonese storyteller on Rediffusion from the 1940’s to 80’s and it was a tribute to an extraordinary man who had dedicated his entire radio broadcasting career to the people of Singapore and the region." (extracted and modified frm Sistic website) Apparently, he had the gift of captivating listeners just by his stories about chinese classics. My parents rem tt whenever his show was on, everyone just stopped what they were doing to listen. It was the form of entertainment during their time. But with the increasing popularity of TV, radio started to phase out. The speak mandarin campaign also forbade local media to have programmes in any other dialect but mandarin. So 李大傻 also got phased out.

Quite a waste, given his passion for telling gd stories, imparting gd morals through the classics... and his gift for inspiring and entertaining many. His life was also kinda tragic...in the sense tt his wife was mentally ill when he married her. So he had to deal with his personal life too. Had 3 thoughts abt this too...

1) Legendary Icon, yet not remembered?
Having been such an icon for 40 yrs, I'm really surprised that he is not remembered today. Tons of pple would stop what they were doing to listen to his stories, from Singapore to many parts of Malaysia. He was part of the 'poor people's' entertainment. Yet he seemed to be phased out so easily with the Speak Mandarin Campaign through which they tried to eradicate the use of all dialects, and the rise of the TV. In the end, he had to repackage himself to do tape recordings... but of course, the reach was more limited. Think it's really sad that such cultural icons were not remembered for their contributions. My generation has never even heard of him!

2) Mandarin vs Dialect
I guess, one of the issues which really moved me was how the zheng hu tried to eradicate the use of all dialects and force pple to use Mandarin. On a personal level, I'd always wondered why I couldn't speak cantonese...why I had to learn mandarin in sch, since no one in my family spoke it! I feel, although we are all chinese, the different dialects have differing traditions which are beautiful and unique to our specific dialect. It is such a waste that all this will be forgotten once the older generation passes on. Other than what my mom can rem, I have no ties at all with tradition. And will prob never have because I've never 'lived' in it, and no one is able to tell me abt it. And although I don't know much abt our country's history and what really happened during the mandarin campaign, I'm still not sure whether the introduction of this language has really helped to unify the chinese. Did we not previously already learn to live together? Wouldn't that have made our culture so much more diverse and interesting? Wouldn't we still be able to communicate with the old folks of today (instead of feeling damn bloody inept when we try to talk to them abt stuff?)

3) Chinese theatre in Singapore
The actors were very well cast, and I was especially impressed with the main star 李大傻 himself. Think the actor's name was Jeffrey Low. Singaporean guy based in HK. His cantonese is damn gd!! He played the character so well, all the way from young guy to old man. Fantastic. Then of course there was Nelson Chia... one of my favs since he taught us acting in NUS. Oh, but what really struck me after the show was that I'd really enjoyed it so much. It's been a while since I was so intensely affected by a play... and what's more, a play which was mostly in cantonese!(of which I had to furiously try and read all the surtitles). I've kinda concluded that the quality of chinese theatre in Singapore is really much better than some of the angmoh crap I've seen. Or maybe more specifically with regard to Toy Factory's chinese theatre. The other time I was so moved was when I watched The Legend of the Mad Phoenix. That was mostly in mandarin, and Nelson was the star. He was amazing. Maybe they're just very good at telling stories of legendary icons etc. But why can't English theatre do some of this and stop venturing so much into the avant garde so that we have the opportunity to listen to/watch some really gd story-telling taking place?

Also recently watched 天冷就回来 with Joanna Dong in it. It's good so u shld go watch. But I'll prob blog abt it another time.

Grumpiness

I'm really not a morning person, so early f**king morning meetings annoy the shit out of me. Just cos b/f is provided doesn't make things any better. How damn contrived is that. There was no opportunity to eat properly cos we all had to say sthg anyway.

And just to add the stink to the shit, u just need to have an ex-boss do stupid things to annoy u like hell again. Bah!

我要当个音乐家!!!

With the recent weekend of music, plus cheena-ness, coupled with the fact that my guitar lessons just keep becoming more enjoyable each week, I just had to let that out.

Have been momentarily inspired to ensure that any music lessons (previous or otherwise) do not go to waste. :D

Yeah. It's a bz time for my mind. More thoughts on my weekend immersion in (cheena) culture coming right up.

不能說的 . 秘密

Had a really strong urge to gush about this movie I'd just watched. It's such a me movie. Cos it encompasses so many elements of concepts/things that I really like. Mainly about music, and love.

But sometimes, it's just difficult to fully express into words the whole plethora of ideas/emotions. Sometimes maybe because there's no one listening, so maybe there's no point in saying. Cos pple don't understand anyway.

或许, 这会变成一个 不能說的.秘密

Maybe when I'm in a better mood. (and I shldn't be a spoiler anyway)

But if you do get beyond the "chinese movie prejudice" and watch it, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised. Cldn't find a better pic to put up..but if I did get hold of some stills, they'd be really beautiful.

Best I Ever Had...

So yeah. Been sick all weekend. And tt really sucked. Esp when the 2nd bunch of medicine didn't agree with my stomach, causing a whole load of other problems. -_-

But... I think I'm finally (almost) well again. Am kinda like on a high somemore.. cos I is *insert matt accent here* learning to play guitar..and soon on the way to become minah rock!! Muahahaha.

Not sure if cos the music really did me gd, or the fact tt I finally had proper i.e. semi-unhealthy food for the first time after like... 4/5 days? Whoo! But seriously, I think I am on my way to learning my first proper song liao. :D

Hanoi Day 6(plus a bit of Day 5)!!

Oh, forgot to say that we had tea before leaving Sapa, at this quaint english cottage-like cafe. I had this thing called baked apple and ice cream. Initially thought they'd made a typo, so was kinda expecting an apple crumble or sthg. But it was really a baked APPLE in it's entirety k. Warm and juicy... together with the ice-cream. Mmm....Lovely! No pics tho cos we were rushing...the food took a while to come (and I decided to do some last min shopping! :p)

And so, we made our way to the train station for another night train trip, this time back to Hanoi. Was a little sad cos...the holiday seemed to be ending a little too quickly for me. :( Maybe Hang was sad too cos her motion sickness also started to act up for the first time on this trip in the van on the way down. She had it quite jialat man...poor thing. Dinner was pleasant at one of the coffeeshops by the street. Had one round of games (the vietnamese dai di) and Bia(Beer) Ha Noi. :)

The next few pics are (once again) beautiful pics taken by YJ. Oh wait, lemme correct that. Actually they were both framed by YJ. But the 2nd pic of the moving train was taken by me (and my steady hands!! :p) Haha. Shameless a bit, but I'm rather proud to be part of the creation of beauty :D

The train trip back was a rather eventful one. I guess I was too 舍不得 since my lovely holiday was coming to an end to waste it away sleeping. So YJ and I stayed up to play silly card games and talk cock. While Steven and Hang concussed. Hahaha. Bad idea though, I really shld've gone to slp much earlier...cos sometime after we'd turned off the lights, YJ suddenly sat up and said "wat's that?!?" I was like "wat wat wat???"

Turns out it was a gigantic monster of a roach climbed into our cabin via the air vents at the bottom of my bed. Aaarrrghhhh. It was thus a torturous 45 mins to an hr (i think) trying to find it and kill it(in the dark) cos we didn't wanna wake the other 2 by switching on the lights. =_= I hate roaches. They are disgusting and stupid. This particular one kept running in and out of our cabin via the air vents below YJ's and my bed. So the both of us ended up jumping intermittently whenever we saw the thing run in and out. In the end, I was so tired, just decided to heck it, cover my face and body with my jacket and go to sleep. Was supposed to fly off the next day also... so i had to have some sleep at least.

Hotel was quite lousy sia. When we got back at abt 6am, the shutters were closed!! For the first time I hear of hotel lidat one! Had to pay some extra to get a rm just to bathe and change etc. But we managed to negotiate for a gd rate. And since YJ and Steven were staying an extra day, they ended up using it. This rm was quite nice also. For some reason when u ask for a double rm in Hanoi, it almost always comes with 1 double bed and 1 single. I dunch understand. But it was the top most rm this time, quite pleasant. We all took a shower and crashed until like noon I think.

Then went for lunch...at this apparently 'recommended' plc. Actually twas more touristy than anything...so many jap tourists and the food was expensive. But the ambience was really nice la. Cos twas in one of those old colonial buildings. On the way back to the hotel, decided to take pics of pple eating on the street. Can't rem whether I said this before but their street stalls just occupy the pavement one. And they just pop up anywhere. Check this one out.

So... had some time to spend before I flew off. Decided to do somemore shopping...and just enjoy the sights and sounds and cheap food of vietnam. Guess what we found? The place tt Hang pointed out to us before. ICE CREAM!!! And the designs were damn nice too!!

Steven ordered this one called Pinocchio. So damn cute right! I think the designs were made with kiddies in mind. Is pretty pretty lor.

And one pic of us happy happy with our ice creams!! :D Check out YJ's funky one with the umbrella thingy.

Yup. and then another silly pic. It started to rain on our way back frm shopping so YJ decided to buy a Vietnamese hat. And I wanted to take a pic of him with it. But then...it ended up on my head. And I dunno what kind of a funny face I was making... and he captured it. Haha.

And so tt was my fantastic trip to Hanoi. Leaving u guys with my parting shot. Took this while I was alone in the cab on the way to the airport. (Luckily didn't kena kidnapped) It kinda sums up the end of my beautiful experience. :)
