Been pondering abt my love for everything 粤 for a while now. I wonder if it's a subconscious thing from my childhood... since I probably had the longest amount of time with my grandparents and great-grandmother... so although I didn't really understand most of what was going on around me, I suppose any use of the language just resonates within me...like a "going back to my roots" thing.
Just like how mando/cantopop also struck a chord in me since pri 5. Not sure how I discovered it, think like I just decided one day that I'd listen to chinese music. (umm.. and maybe also cos of how cute I thought Leon Lai looked :p) Definitely nothing to do with my family on this, cos my parents are totally ang moh pai. And they were horrified to find me listening to 93.3 on the radio!
Ok, talking about music, my Canto supplier passed me a CD full of 100 over canto songs recently, so I've been listening!! Totally rediscovered 张学友 and 郑秀文. "New" music, shiok only la!! So anyway, share with u guys another song, by Sammi .. haven't heard of her in a while alr huh! But this song damn nice. Altho I don't totally get the words and the MV looks super depressing, it's still a nice tune :)
There's sthg about hearing pple speak cantonese, and all things 粤.. or HK that I so love. Really loved 家好月圆 cos the family owned a traditional chinese cake shop. I love love love egg tarts and 老婆饼s!! Was rather fascinated with the bridal cakes and all too. Will definitely go check out 恒香 when I go to HK again. Which is gonna happen this July btw!! Just wait till I book my flight!!
Methinks I could really settle down in HK... love all the food... the idea of 凉茶, dimsum, 汤 (which I really take for granted right now), and all the other super duper yummy food. Culture-wise... the things that they value are quite similar to what S'poreans value I suppose... which is what makes them so enterprising and such shrewd businessmen. Maybe only abit scared at their focus on money and materialism la. But having said that, I think it's a chinese thing la. Most S'poreans also like tt mah. Just a matter of whether u want to buy into it or not that's all.
Yest SH was surprised when I said I can't really speak cantonese.. cos cantonese pple are usually quite proud of their lang/culture/heritage and all. I know la.. 真丢脸 right... but what to do... never get to use mah. Now only get to hear it when I watch my canto dramas lor. I suppose the amt tt I can now understand has improved tremendously but..it still comes out wrong when I want to speak! Aargh.. same bloody prob for my mandarin :( But well, if I do manage to get off my ass and work on this new idea I've been thinking about for a while now, maybe the inability to speak cantonese can be rectified! *dreams*
